PADANG BESAR (Bernama): Police arrested two Thai smugglers suspected of being involved in a shooting at the Malaysian-Thai border on Tuesday (Nov 24), where a corporal from the General Operations Force (GOF) was killed. .
“One (smuggler) was captured by a VAT 69 commando squad after the incident and the other was arrested by GOF Battalion 3. No weapons were recovered,” said Perlis Police Chief Datuk Surina Saad.
He also said that Malaysian police were informed that Thai authorities had arrested four other suspects.
“Of the four arrested by the Thai authorities, three smugglers were reportedly injured and the person who helped them was also injured,” he told reporters near the shooting site here.
He said Malaysian police will seek the cooperation of their Thai counterparts in obtaining statements from suspects arrested in the kingdom.
Surina said preliminary investigations showed that around 13 smugglers were involved in the shooting at Border Wall 9 (TS9).
“The smugglers were believed to be carrying around 12 packages of ketum leaves (estimated at 400-500 kg) and a jute sack of cough medicine,” he added.
He said the GOF member killed in the shooting, Corporal Baharuddin Ramli from Battalion 3 (Senoi Praaq), was shot in the left side of the stomach. He died at the scene.
Baharuddin’s colleague, Corporal Norihan Tari, was also shot in the stomach and was admitted to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar with serious injuries, he said.
