Two suspects in police pursuit drown after car sinks into ditch

KANGAR: Two men drowned after their car skidded and sank in an irrigation canal near a padi field in Utan Aji here after a police chase on Tuesday (September 29).

Kangar OCPD Superintendent Wari Kiew said the 21 and 25-year-old suspects had fled a police checkpoint at Jalan Lencongan Dua here, prompting the Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) to pursue them.

“During the chase, the suspects’ car skidded and sank into an irrigation canal near a padi field before sinking,” he said in a statement about the incident that occurred at 10 am.

Villagers who saw the incident helped rescue the suspects from the sinking vehicle.

“However, they were both dead when they were pulled from the wrecked car,” Supt Wari said, adding that the suspects drowned after they were unable to get out safely.

The suspects were declared dead by medical personnel who arrived at the scene around 11:40 a.m.

Superintendent Wari said controls found that the car used by the suspects was reported stolen in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.

He said the suspects were also found to have a history of six prior criminal and drug offenses between them.

The bodies have been sent to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital for an autopsy.

The case is being investigated under Article 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
