TEMERLOH: Two male suspects believed to be foreigners have been shot dead in an exchange of gunfire with the police near Kampung Charuk Puting.

The state CID’s senior commander chief, Datuk Othman Nanyan, said that the Terengganu and Pahang CID had been investigating a series of robberies and, after receiving a tip, an operation was mounted around 5 a.m.Monday (19 October).

“The police team came across a suspicious looking Toyota Camry in Jalan Jerantut-Temerloh and that’s when the suspects rushed into the car and attempted to ram the police vehicle.

“They were successfully cut off in a car chase, after which one of the suspects opened fire. Police personnel responded to the fire and the two suspects were killed,” he said at the Temerloh police headquarters here.

SAC Othman said a police officer was shot, but most were unharmed when the bullet struck their bulletproof vest.

He said the suspects, aged between 30 and 40, were believed to have been involved in robbing supermarkets, office buildings and factories in Terengganu and Pahang over the past year.

A .38 revolver was recovered from the suspects’ car along with a live bullet and four shell casings.

Various tools are also believed to have been used for the theft, SAC Othman said.
