JOHOR BARU: The government will have to amend two laws to increase the current compound of RM 1,000 imposed on violators of the recovery movement control order (MCO), says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The Chief Minister (Security) said that in addition to amending the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act of 1988 (Act 342), the government would also need to amend the Interpretation Act.
He added that the matter was raised during the last cabinet meeting in which the minister of the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, was asked to study the matter.
“The amendment of the two laws to increase the compounding amount will first require extensive study before it can be taken to Parliament to discuss where it should be passed.
“However, it will be more time before a decision can be made,” he said when meeting after introducing the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) to some 350 army veterans at a resort in Ulu Tiram here on Sunday (August 30). ).
On Saturday (August 29), Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Adham Baba said that the decision to increase the compound imposed on MCO offenders from the current 1,000 RM should be discussed at the next meeting of Parliament.
Dr Adham was commenting on Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement endorsing the recent Health Ministry proposal to increase the compound rate for those who violate the recovery MCO.
On Friday (Aug 28), Muhyiddin said he supported the Health Ministry’s proposal to increase the compound crime rate (against the recovery MCO) by at least two to three times the current rate.
“However, this must be studied and Law 342 must be amended,” Muhyiddin said.
On Tuesday (August 25), the Ministry of Health proposed that the government increase the fine for aggravated crimes under the Law from the current 1,000 to 10,000 ringgit.
