KUALA LUMPUR: The Selayang Magistrates Court today ordered that two factory workers be detained for six days to aid investigations into the contamination of a river that resulted in the interruption of water supplies to 1.2 million people during the last four days.

Magistrate Nik Mohd Fadli Nik Azlan issued the preventive detention order against the two men, aged 20 and 57, for the contamination of Sungai Gong in Rawang.

Sungai Gong is a tributary of Sungai Sembah, which flows into Sungai Selangor and supplies water to four treatment plants.

The plants had to shut down when contamination was detected last Thursday.

The two men appeared in court at 9.15 am today. They were arrested in Rawang yesterday.

They are being detained under Section 430 of the Penal Code for allegedly committing harm by causing a decrease in the supply of water for agricultural purposes, or for food or drink for human beings or animals.

The section provides for a jail term of between five and 30 years or a fine, or both, on conviction.

On September 5, four factory managers, all brothers between the ages of 50 and 60, were sent to preventive detention for six days for the same problem.

The closure of the four water treatment plants, namely phases 1, 2 and 3 of the Sungai Selangor water treatment plant and the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant, interrupted the water supply to 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley.
