PETALING JAYATwo directors of a company suspected of dumping scheduled waste at Sungai Gong, causing a water disruption in the Klang Valley about two weeks ago, are expected to be indicted in court today for the crime.

Selangor Police CID Chief SAC Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said yesterday that the men, aged 31 and 61, will be charged in Selayang’s court of sessions for “dumping or depositing scheduled waste into the environment that they cause pollution “under Section 25 of the Environmental Quality Act and” damage caused to irrigation works “under Section 430 of the Penal Code.

He said the directors’ six workers, including two Malaysians and four foreigners between the ages of 25 and 66, will be prosecution witnesses in the case.

“There are five cases of such contamination that we are investigating. This is the second case to come to court since the Selangor CID conducted investigations in September. We will ensure that action is taken against those behind such crimes. “

The directors and six workers were arrested at the factory on October 19 after the odor from the effluent dumped at Sungai Gong was suspected of coming from a company that repairs and sells construction machinery.

The arrests were made after Air Selangor detected three tons of effluent at its water source in Sungai Selangor. As a result, its Sungai Selangor water treatment plant was forced to cease operations for a cleanup, affecting more than 1.2 million households.
