KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR / ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – A helicopter crashed in Taman Melawati, a neighborhood in Ulu Klang, Selangor, after colliding with another helicopter in the air on Sunday (November 8) morning.

It was learned that the plane crashed in an area near a Tamil school. Two men were killed in the collision, police said. Two others, a man and a woman, survived.

Police confirmed that former Malaysia Airlines Group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya is one of the two who survived the plane crash.

Mohamad Farouk Esha, officer in charge of the Ampang Jaya Police District Assistant, said that Datuk Ahmad Jauhari, 66, and another person identified as Tan Chai Eian, 51, were in the helicopter that managed to land safely near the school.

He said the two men who died are Mohamed Sabri Baharom, 56, and Mohd Irfan Fikri Mohamed Rawi, 44.

ACP Mohamad Farouk said the two helicopters were from the same company.

“We believe they were from Subang and headed for Genting Sempah,” he said. “We are investigating the cause of death, while the Civil Aviation Department will carry out the investigation into the accident and crash.”

In a statement, Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong said the two G2CA helicopters had been involved in a flight training session with four crew members. They had departed from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Kuala Lumpur.

The Kuala Lumpur Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Center was activated to provide all necessary rescue coordination efforts, Datuk Seri Wee said in the statement.

The Ministry of Transportation’s Air Accident Investigation Office has launched a technical investigation, he added.

The main objective of the investigation is to determine the circumstances and the cause of the accident in order to safeguard lives and prevent future accidents.

“In this sense, the investigation that will be initiated is not to distribute blame or responsibility,” Dr. Wee said in the statement.

Gombak MP Azmin Ali arrived at the scene after being briefed in the morning about the accident.

“We hope that the relevant authorities such as the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the police will be able to investigate the matter thoroughly,” said Datuk Seri Azmin. “We will await more information while the investigation continues.”
