Two ‘Datuk’ Arrested for Sarawak Country Road Case Released on MACC Bail

KUCHING (September 13): The two directors of the company, who were detained last Friday to facilitate the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into the allegation of falsification of claims about a rural roads project ‘Jiwa Murni’ worth 800 million ringgit, have been released on bail from MACC.

The release of the two company directors was confirmed by lawyers for the duo Shankar Ram, who represents the 44-year-old suspect, and Albert Tang, who represents the 42-year-old suspect.

“My client is released and we register our thanks to MACC for their professional handling of the matter and my thanks to expert DPP (Deputy Prosecutor) S. Thangavelu and his team,” Shankar said when contacted here today by The Borneo Post.

Tang, when contacted, said: “SPRM (MACC) released both suspects and the court issued a release order.”

Both Shankar and Tang said their clients were released on MACC bail.

The two high-profile suspects, with the title ‘Datuk’, were placed in pre-trial detention for two days after their arrest in a special MACC operation here last Tuesday.

His pretrial detention order was extended for another two days last Friday as the MACC required more time to complete its investigation.

The case was investigated under Sections 16 (b), 17 (a) and 18 of the MACC Act of 2009, which carries prison sentences for a period of no more than 20 years and a fine of no less than five times the sum or value of gratification. which is the object of the crime, after the conviction.

The MACC in a statement last Tuesday said that the two directors of the company were proprietary partners of three companies that monopolized the ‘Jiwa Murni’ project.

The project, under the Ministry of Defense, involved the execution of 10 works to improve rural roads in Miri, Kapit, Ba Kelalan, Limbang and Belaga.

It was awarded by the ministry to the company for a term from 2010 to 2016.

In its statement, MACC said: “Our informant said that the locals had filed many complaints against the poor condition of these rural roads because they were not built to specification.”

He added that these rural roads located in Miri, Kapit, Ba Kelalan, Limbang and Belaga were damaged after a few months of construction.

MACC said that based on the technical investigation, the work performed was not in accordance with the Department of Public Works (JKR) standard.
