(AP): Dozens of President Donald Trump supporters chanted “Stop the count!” descended on a vote-tallying center in Detroit, Michigan, on Wednesday, as Americans on both sides of the political divide expressed anger and frustration over the indecisive presidential race in scattered protests across the country.
The Detroit protests began shortly before The Associated Press declared that former Vice President Joe Biden had won Michigan.
Video filmed by local media showed angry people gathering outside the TCF Center and inside the lobby, with police officers lined up to prevent them from entering the counting area. They chanted “Stop the count!” and “Stop the voting!”
Earlier, the Republican campaign filed a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the count, demanding that Michigan’s Democratic secretary of state allow more inspectors in. Trump has repeatedly insisted, without evidence, that there are big problems with voting and counting.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, insisted both parties and the public had had access to the recount “using a robust system of checks and balances to ensure that all ballots are counted fairly and accurately.”
Scattered protests broke out Tuesday night after the vote ended, stretching from Washington DC to Seattle, but there were no widespread riots or significant violence.
In Portland, Oregon, Richard March attended a protest against Trump despite a heart condition that makes him vulnerable to Covid-19.
“Questioning this election has dire consequences for our democracy,” he said. “I think we are now a very polarized society, and I am concerned about what will happen in the days, weeks and months to come.”
The lengthy task of counting this year’s flood of votes by mail raised fears that the lack of clarity in the presidential race could lead to conflict.
Another anti-Trump rally was scheduled for Wednesday night, with protesters gathering in Houston, Minneapolis and other cities. – AP
