Weeks after losing the election, US President Donald Trump is now losing Twitter followers by the day, according to Newsweek.
More than 46,000 of the president’s former disciples have reportedly stopped receiving his tweets since Nov. 22. The president still has nearly 89 million followers, but lost 10,000 readers at noon on November 25.
Newsweek noted that Trump’s Twitter following fell by 12,476 followers on November 24 and nearly 6,000 more on November 23. On November 22, he lost 19,164 followers.
According to that report, it is possible that Twitter’s crackdown on bots, accounts not managed by humans, is reducing Trump’s still massive numbers.
Trump’s decline in readership coincides with a movement called “UnfollowThePres,” which encourages the public to ask Twitter to flag the president’s tweets that purport to spread misinformation. Since losing the Nov.3 election, Trump has used Twitter to promote fringe media reports that help him build an alternate narrative in which the former reality star was not defeated by roughly six million votes.
Since his electoral defeat, there have been numerous Trump tweets declaring victory and promoting conspiracy theories.
“EQUIPPED CHOICE!” tweeted Wednesday.
That seemingly unfounded outburst was accompanied by a Twitter warning tag that read: “This claim about voter fraud is in dispute.”
Trump may be ousted from Twitter on January 20 once he ceases to be head of state. The current status of the president protects him from the repercussions that civilians who promote falsehoods may face. According to The Washington Post, Trump averages 50 lies or misleading claims per day.
President-elect Joe Biden’s Twitter following reportedly rose by 130,000 followers on Wednesday, though his total Twitter audience of less than 19 million pales in comparison to that of the outgoing commander-in-chief, a proven master of the medium.
Former President Barack Obama has more than 126 million followers on Twitter, making him the most popular figure on that social media platform. Singers Justin Bieber and Katy Perry are the only other people on Twitter with more than 100 million followers.
