WASHINGTON: Only 37.4% of active personnel in the US military support the re-election of President Donald Trump, while 43.1% support his Democratic opponent Joe Biden, according to a new poll conducted Monday.

The survey by the Military Times and the Syracuse University Institute for Veterans and Military Families found that half of service men and women have an unfavorable opinion of Trump, with 42% strongly disapproving, compared to 38%. % with a favorable opinion of the Republican leader. .

Support for Trump fell from the previous poll in December 2019, when he had a favorable rating of 42%.

The 1,018-person poll was conducted ahead of recent Democratic and Republican party national conventions, in which parties raise cases to support their candidate.

The poll focused more on career Army members than younger and junior enlisted personnel, Military Times noted, so it is not a complete snapshot of what the entire American military thinks.

Trump has boasted of strong support among the military and has touted his increased funding for the Pentagon budget.

But that record is clouded by frequent disputes with the Pentagon leadership, including popular defense secretary Jim Mattis, who resigned in December 2018, and political conflicts with current secretary, Mark Esper, and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. , General Mark Milley.
