Despite the coronavirus pandemic, UMW Toyota Motor has had a busy 2020. After two low-key mid-year launches, the RAV4 and GR Supra 2021, the company really got the ball rolling in October with the debut of Hilux renewed. But he saved the best for last, swinging for the hurdles earlier this month with the revamped Vios and Yaris, the world premiere of the Vios GR Sport and the long-awaited GR Yaris.
The GR Yaris, in particular, was a triumph for the company. We are one of only two countries in Southeast Asia to have received the rally-inspired hot hatch, and while Thailand got it first, our car is much cheaper, hovering just below the RM 300,000 mark. We also receive a much higher allocation, with no less than 127 units for you to get your hands on.
But our focus is now on next year, which promises to be another great year for Toyota; It finally appears to be mounting a suitable challenge to the hegemony of the Honda HR-V with the Corolla Cross. The new Harrier and Camry, Innova and Fortuner are also expected to arrive in 2021.
Toyota corolla cross
Despite the name, the Corolla Cross is not a C-segment competitor; It’s bigger than a C-HR, sure, but it’s cheaper to build and has a torsion bar rear suspension instead of the latter’s more expensive double wishbones. In particular, the lower cost ensures that the car will be well prepared to take on the HR-V in a way that the more expensive and less practical C-HR has failed to do convincingly in ASEAN.
Corolla Cross’s positioning in the SUV market will make it Toyota’s top model in 2021; it is not a coincidence that the C-HR has been discontinued in Malaysia. The car has already proven to be more than a rival to the HR-V, outselling the perennial best-seller in Thailand. The question is, can you do it here?
As with everything in Malaysia, it all comes down to price. To have any chance of being competitive, UMW Toyota will have to assemble the car locally. If it does, the Corolla Cross will be the first CKD car sold here based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), as previous models (the C-HR, Camry, Corolla, RAV4 and GR Yaris) have all been fully imported. from Thailand or Japan.
Riding the car here would also increase the likelihood of a hybrid model, which would benefit from exemptions from import and excise taxes. In Thailand, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is powered by a 1.8-liter 98hp / 142Nm Atkinson cycle engine and a 72hp / 163Nm electric motor, delivering a total system power of 122hp.
Toyota harrier
From the bottom of Toyota’s SUV range, we now move to the top. The new fourth-generation Harrier was launched in Japan in June, so it should hit the shores of Malaysia next year. It will almost certainly be fully imported from its home country, and since the RAV4 already sells around the RM200,000 mark, the larger, more luxurious Harrier is expected to be significantly more expensive than the previous model.
One cause for possible dismay is that the new Harrier loses the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine from the old car, instead using the RAV4’s naturally aspirated CVT and Dynamic Force mill. This unit will not have the forced induction boost premium car buyers are used to, and the more powerful 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain will likely be too expensive to offer here.
Toyota Camry facelift
Another of Toyota’s more expensive models, the Camry should soon be unveiled in the United States in July. Changes are fairly minor and limited to an even more expressive front bumper, a top-mounted floating infotainment touchscreen, new trim and upholstery options, and an improved Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+. The suite of driver assistance systems adds new features for cyclist and approaching vehicle detection, emergency steering assist, improved adaptive cruise control and a rear seat reminder.
Beyond the facelift, however, we hope that the Camry will finally receive the latest 209 PS / 250 Nm 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. We were told that the current car’s outdated powertrain, which has been in use since 2015, was the result of a supply bottleneck from the new factory. This problem needs to be fixed, paving the way for the new car to get the engine it was always designed for.
If the Corolla Cross is assembled here, the Camry could be next in line, dropping the current price of around $ 190,000. This would likely see the reintroduction of new variants, including a cheaper 2.0-liter model and maybe even a hybrid. However, the law of diminishing returns means that Toyota could spare local assembly for cheaper models with higher volume.
Toyota Innova Renovation
With the revamped Hilux now for sale, the truck’s other IMV siblings are next. The Innova MPV got a bite back in October, sporting a new grille with chrome trim, a more aggressive front bumper and a hexagonal rear number plate garnish, plus redesigned wheel options.
Toyota has been quite aggressive in proliferating the Toyota Safety Sense suite throughout the Malaysian lineup, so expect the Innova to come with the assists introduced in the new Hilux, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and assist. lane keeping. Engine-wise, the car should go ahead with the same 163PS / 183Nm 2.0-liter naturally aspirated mill as before.
Toyota Fortuner facelift
Last but not least, there’s the refreshed Fortuner, unveiled in August with a redesigned front bumper, larger grille, revised bi-LED headlights, and 3-D LED taillights. There’s also a sportier Legender model in Thailand that amplifies the visual aggression a few notches, though we’re not sure if it’ll come here.
New features include an Optitron instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch multi-information display, shift paddles on the steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Fortuner also features the aforementioned Toyota Safety Sense systems, as well as an upgraded 204 hp / 500 Nm 2.8-liter turbodiesel that is more powerful and refined. Fuel consumption has also been reduced across the board.
