PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Law will be revised so that those responsible for causing death or injury to other road users face a stronger punishment, transport minister Wee Ka Siong said today.
He said he had ordered the Department of Highway Transportation to review the law. Others involved in the review were the police, the cameras of the Attorney General and the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute.
Wee said the ministry seriously considered the problem of drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or who drive recklessly and who killed other road users, including shift enforcement personnel.
He said a review would also be conducted on the permissible limit of concentration of alcohol in the blood of drivers under Sections 45 and 45A that are related to being in charge of motor vehicles under the influence of liquor or intoxicating drugs.
A review of Section 44 (1) would also be conducted related to driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages or intoxicating drugs and causing death or injury to others.
On Saturday, a police officer led by a suspected drunk driver ran over a police officer on duty at a roadblock. Corporal Safwan Muhammad Ismail, 31, of the Kajang Police Headquarters, died at the scene of serious head and body injuries.
