KOTA KINABALU: The full autonomy granted to Sabah Umno by the central party leadership is a great test that must translate into the determination of the party’s leadership in order to meet the aspirations of the people in the upcoming state elections on September 26, political analysts said. .

According to them, the most important thing is to give people an understanding of autonomous power, which is one of the privileges granted to ensure that development in Sabah follows their own mold.

The privileges granted to Sabah Umno include the power to choose its own candidates in the elections, determine their choice for the prime minister and elected representatives and the persons to fill positions if they win the elections, as well as various issues related to the rights and interests of Sabahans.

Full autonomy aims to ‘locate’ Umno in Sabah and dispel allegations that Sabah Umno is only following the lead of Umno’s central leadership, thus safeguarding the party’s survival in Sabah after losing power in the XIV Election. General (GE14).

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) political analyst Dr. Syahruddin Awang Ahmad said that the full autonomy granted to Sabah Umno is not a trivial matter that can be easily understood, especially for young voters in the upcoming Sabah 16 election. , the first Sabah Umno will face since it was given autonomy.

He said the Sabah Umno leadership should take advantage of autonomy to restructure the party by running new candidates in elections this time, especially in the 13 new state seats.

Syahruddin, who is a senior lecturer in the UMS College of Humanities, Arts and Heritage, said the new challenges require Umno state leadership to develop credible young leaders.

“There are many among the young generation of Sabah Umno who can be given opportunities, and this may be the best formula for Sabah Umno to return to the fight, in the eyes of the Sabahans, who once enjoyed development as a result of party politics. fight, ”he said.

Another UMS political analyst, Dr. Ramli Dollah, opined that Sabah’s election was not only a test of the full autonomy granted, but would also test Umno’s state leadership on how it would determine the party’s leadership in polls. .

In this context, he said, the selection of candidates and the distribution of seats, as well as the possible candidates for the post of prime minister, should be carefully discussed and decided by the state leadership of Umno.

This, he said, was to avoid internal disputes among Umno’s top state leaders, such as criticism over the appointment of Sabah Umno’s chief liaison, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, to lead the Barisan Nasional (BN) electoral machinery that allegedly it was not discussed at the state leadership level.

Ramli also opined that party-related matters should be discussed in private using available channels, as Umno is a large and systematic party and has extensive experience in the country’s political arena.

“Therefore, openly discussing internal party issues will have a negative impact on Umno’s image, as well as giving the impression that Umno was fighting even before the real ‘war’ takes place in the state elections,” he explained. . – Named
