KLANG: The Top Glove Corporation says it will cooperate fully with authorities as the Department of Labor plans to take legal action against the company for allegedly failing to comply with government regulations on housing its workers.

The latex medical glove maker also reiterated that it was acquiring more accommodations for its workers.

“Top Glove would like to clarify that efforts to seek more accommodation and improve the accommodation of existing workers are ongoing, in light of the large number of workers we employ,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday (December 1).

The Labor Department said it would take Top Glove and several other companies to court for allegedly disobeying the Minimum Standards for Housing and Workers’ Services Act of 1990 (Law 446).

Top Glove added that the company expected to complete its efforts to improve worker housing around December 31 of this year.

“This is in line with the government’s educational focus on employers in various sectors until the end of this year, so that they can comply with Law 446,” he said.

Top Glove said it has spent around RM20,000 in the last two months to buy 100 apartment units to serve as worker shelters in compliance with government conditions.

Before that, the company said it had also spent roughly RM50,000 on 100 two-story houses and hostels that came with amenities like an indoor dining room, ATMs, barber shops and mini-markets.

“Our workforce is the company’s greatest asset and we are committed to continuing to work closely with the relevant authorities to make the necessary improvements to ensure the safety, health and well-being of our employees,” he said.

Top Glove found itself at the center of Covid-19 pandemic attention recently after several thousand of its foreign workers tested positive for the virus.

Human Resources Minister M. Saravanan had recently said that the Labor Department will investigate the accommodations of Top Glove workers that were allegedly not up to standard.
