PUTRAJAYA: The appeal of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pix) against his conviction and sentence of 12 years in prison and fine of 210 million ringgit for misappropriation of 42 million ringgit of funds SRC International Sdn Bhd, will be heard starting February 15 of next year.
The Deputy Registrar of the Court of Appeals, Darmafikri Abu Adam, set 12 days from February 15 to February 18, February 22 to February 25 and from March 1 to March 4, 2021 for the hearing of the appeal during today’s case management.
During the handling of the case, Deputy Prosecutor Mohd Ashraf Adrin Kamaril and lawyers Harvinderjit Singh and Nur Syahirah Hanapiah were present, representing Najib.
Najib filed the appeal brief against the conviction and sentence handed down by High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali on July 30 after finding him guilty of seven counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), money laundering and abuse of office. involving RM42. million SRC funds.
On July 28, the deputy from Pekan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for each of the three CBT cases and each of the three money laundering cases and 12 years in prison and a fine of 210 million ringgit, in the absence of five years in prison, in the case of abuse of office.
However, Najib will only serve 12 years in jail, as the judge ordered all jail sentences to be executed at the same time. He is currently out on bail of RM2 million on two guarantees pending appeal.
On August 7, the prosecution had filed a cross appeal to increase the sentence.
On September 25, Najib had obtained a 30-day extension to file his appeal request after the Court of Appeal allowed his request for an extension.
In the case of the prosecution’s counter-appeal, it is understood that because the prosecution did not file the appeal request within the deadline or request an extension, the appeal has lapsed. –Called
