JOHOR BARU: The request to extend the five-day period of pre-trial detention for the Rohingya refugee who calls himself “Long Tiger” has been rejected by the Muar Magistrates Court.
However, the 31-year-old suspect was arrested again after a new case was reported at the Tangkak District Police Headquarters under Section 388 of the Penal Code for extortion, said Johor Police Chief Com. Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
“The previous preventive detention was related to investigations under Section 500 of the Criminal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Law. It was rejected by the court.
“The suspect was arrested again at the Muar District Police Headquarters at 5.45pm Saturday by officers from the Tangkak District Police Headquarters due to a new report under Section 388 of the Penal Code,” he said in a statement. here.
This crime carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years and can also be fined or whipped in case of conviction.
The new request for pre-trial detention was made in accordance with Section 117 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and was granted by the Court of First Instance in Tangkak for three days and will end tomorrow.
“This return is required to conduct further investigations into the suspect’s involvement in this case,” said Comm Ayob.
“The public is advised not to speculate that the case is still under investigation.”
Previously, Long Tiger was detained on April 28 at his home in Muar after he allegedly made a defamatory statement against a police officer at Tangkak headquarters. Com Ayob confirmed his arrest at a press conference on Thursday after photos and videos of the arrested man. went viral.
He said the investigation revealed that the man had a criminal record for three crimes.
“In 2012, he was charged under Sections 363 and 376 of the Penal Code for kidnapping and rape.
“In 2009, he was convicted under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation,” he added.
The suspect has temporary resident status, as well as a refugee card issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Comm Ayob also said that a police corporal from the Muar police department, who allegedly released videos of the arrested suspect on social media, was detained for further investigation.
“The 27-year-old police officer is currently being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998.
“He took a video of the Rohingya man at the Muar police department and was arrested on April 29,” he said.
