MELAKA: Three sisters and a man claimed trial in the Court of Sessions in Ayer Keroh here for a total of 56 charges for alleged exploitation of 35 Indonesian and Cambodian women.
The defendant Ee Hwei Ping, 38; Ee Hwei Shan, 33 years old; and Ee Hwei Ting, 34, were indicted along with his accomplice Koh Chee Pin, 38, before Judge Norma Ismail on Monday (December 21).
The sisters faced 35 charges for allegedly holding 32 Indonesians and three Cambodians, aged 18 to 40, against their will.
Koh, who is Hwei Shan’s husband, also pleaded not guilty to 21 charges against him.
All four faced charges under article 12 of the 2007 Anti-Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants Act.
If convicted, they could face a maximum jail sentence of 15 years and a fine.
Koh also faced one charge under Article 109 of the Penal Code for complicity with the three sisters in the exploitation of women.
According to the charge sheets, the four allegedly committed the crimes at 10.30 pm, between March and November 2020 in Taman Merbok, Bukit Katil, here.
All four were represented by lawyer Faiezad Razali.
The court imposed a fine of 40,000 ringgit with a bond for each of the crimes and ordered the surrender of their international passports to the court, in addition to ordering the four to report to the nearest police station until the end of the judicial process. . .
The court also set January 15, 2021 as the date for the recall.
On Sunday (December 20), police said they rescued migrant workers, employed as cleaners in Melaka and Selangor.
Bukit Aman CID chief Huzir Mohamed said a Cambodian woman and 32 Indonesians were rescued in Melaka Tengah, while two Indonesian women were rescued in Selangor.
The victims had been working as household cleaners at a cleaning services agency in Melaka since 2018.
The four defendants were released on bail.
