PUTRAJAYA: Three officers from the Immigration Department have been sent to prison in connection with alleged corruption to speed up the department’s processes.
The three, aged between 33 and 35, have been in pre-trial detention for five days to allow the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate allegations that all three, including a woman, had received bribes to expedite the process of issuing passes to foreigners who wish to return to their country of origin.
Justice Shah Wira Abdul Halim on Thursday (September 9) allowed MACC’s request to return the trio.
They were arrested at MACC headquarters here when they were summoned to give their statement on Wednesday (September 9).
According to the sources, the three have been offering their “services” since the beginning of the recovery movement control order (MCO).
They were believed to have been working with intermediaries to arrange the issuance of passes for foreigners who stayed longer and wanted to return home.
The “service” allowed foreigners who applied for the pass to obtain it without going through the Immigration Online Appointment System (STO).
Officers are believed to have received between RM300 and RM500 for each pass issued.
Putrajaya MACC director Hasbilah Mohamad Salleh confirmed that the case is under investigation.
He also said that two other people, including an immigration officer, were also referred Wednesday in connection with the case.
