Those with road taxes due between one and three years can renew without Puspakom checks, says Dr. Wee

PUTRAJAYA: Those who have not renewed the road tax for their vehicles for one to three years can now do so without having Puspakom controls, says Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong (Photo).

However, the Transport Minister said this only applies to private and individual vehicle owners.

The exemption does not apply to commercial vehicles such as buses, trucks and electronic call vehicles to ensure the safety of the public, Dr. Wee said.

“We have received many requests from people, so we made the decision that those whose road tax has expired between one and three years can renew it.

“Before this, those with expired road taxes (more than a year) would have to undergo controls by Puspakom or the Department of Road Transport (JPJ).

“However, as some people are facing difficulties due to Covid-19, we are granting this exemption,” he said at a press conference after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a strategic collaboration program between JPJ, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and the Skills Development Department of the Ministry of Human Resources on Thursday (September 3).

Dr. Wee said that to date, there are 4.274 million vehicles that have expired the road tax in between one and three years.

Meanwhile, Dr. Wee also announced a 70% discount extension on citations.

Initially, the discount was made in conjunction with the National Day last month.

However, the discount has been extended until the end of September, he said.

“We found that many are unable to renew their license because they have been blacklisted for not paying their citations.

“Many are looking for work and some want to work with food delivery or email companies, but they need a license, so we will extend the discount.

“But this is also a lesson because if they make a mistake, they still have to pay,” he said.

It was reported that the discount is given to all composable citations issued by JPJ and the Public Land Transport Commission (SPAD, or what is now known as the Public Land Transport Agency) for infractions under the Road Transport Law and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Act and other rules and orders under it, including cases that are still blacklisted.

This discount offer is not applicable for citations issued by the police.

On another topic, Dr. Wee said that there should be dedicated motorcycle lanes to ensure their safety, although that depends on the financial capacity of the government.

He said having an exclusive lane for motorcyclists would require it to be separate from the current road system.

This requires space and financial allocation, which depends on the Ministry of Works.

Previously, Dr. Wee, who witnessed the signing of the MOU, hoped that the strategic collaboration would produce JPJ officers with higher-order thinking skills, digital capabilities, creative, and capable of thinking outside the box.

Dr. Wee said the collaboration is part of JPJ’s long-term plan to further enhance the department’s workforce.

He said that improving the performance of the public service sector has always been the nation’s development agenda, as this would produce an efficient civil service that can serve the rakyat and the country.
