KUALA LUMPUR, September 12: After several rounds of leaks and teasers, the Proton X50 is officially revealed on Proton social channels.
They have shared three high resolution images that provide a better view of the front, sides, and interior.
Although it is no secret that it is based on Geely Binyue, it seems that Proton has included a couple of additional features that most Malaysians would appreciate.
In terms of exterior, it looks a lot like the Chinese-made Binyue that the X50 is based on, but it does come with some distinctive Proton design features. This includes the infinite weave pattern on the grid and the Ethereal Bow which is highlighted in red.
Similar to the X70, there is also a “TGDI” badge on the front doors. The photos also confirmed the availability of the panoramic sunroof for the top-of-the-range model and you can also expect a host of Advanced Drive Assistance System such as autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
If you look closely at the image above, the brake calipers are also painted red, but this might only be offered on the higher spec models.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, it looks like the X50 will be offered in Jet Gray (similar to the current X70) and solid red. You can also expect the compact SUV to come in blue as shown in the Merdeka video.
Being a 2020 model, you also get the new round Proton badge on the front, the steering wheel, and the center caps on each wheel.
Inside, you get a more modern looking cockpit than the X70 thanks to a floating touchscreen entertainment screen. This is probably the same 10 ″ unit found on Geely models running on GKUI and we don’t think it is compatible with Android Auto or Apple Car Play.
You also get the same shifter-by-wire as the new X70 CKD, confirming that the X50 will be equipped with a 7-speed DCT.
If you look behind you, you will find not one, but two USB ports that provide greater charging convenience for rear passengers.
On top of that, the Proton X50 also provides two rear air vents, which is ideal for our tropical climate. For comparison, the Geely Binyue in China and the Geely Coolray in the Philippines only offer a single USB port and there are no rear air vents.
The locally assembled Proton X50 is expected to come with a 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder turbo engine that is rated to put out 177 hp and 255 Nm of torque. Expect the new compact SUV to be priced well below RM100,000 and this would provide serious competition to other B-segment SUVs, such as the Honda HR-V.
The launch is expected to happen very soon. According to Paultan, Proton’s chief executive Dr. Li Chunrong has hinted that they will make an announcement on Tuesday. According to Proton, they will release more updates on their social media pages and website very soon. – SoyaCincau
