KUALA LUMPUR: An alleged thief was arrested after he tried to evade a police checkpoint near the Kuchai Maju area.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Zairulnizam Mohd Zainuddin @ Hilmi said the incident happened around 4.30am on Saturday (October 17).

“A team from the Petaling Police Station carried out an operation in Jalan Kuchai Maju, opposite Jalan Klang Lama, when they noticed that a man was driving a motorcycle and behaving suspiciously.

“When police tried to stop him for a check, the suspect tried to flee the scene, but was arrested shortly after he crashed his motorcycle at an intersection there,” he said in a statement on Monday (October 19).

He said police found several sharp weapons and tools believed to have been used in home searches when they searched the 32-year-old suspect’s purse.

“We arrested the suspect and confiscated a knife, a flashlight, five screwdrivers, two modified metal rods, a crowbar, a set of keys, bolt cutters, a chisel and a set of keys.

“During the initial investigations, the suspect confessed to his involvement in several burglary cases within the Brickfields area,” he said, adding that the suspect had a history of drug-related crimes.

He said the suspect has been in pretrial detention for four days.

“We are also investigating the case for carrying offensive weapons in public and obstructing a public servant in the exercise of his functions.

“This should be a warning to the public not to carry or possess dangerous weapons,” he said.

He urged anyone with information about criminal activity to contact the Brickfields Police Hotline at 03-2297 9222.
