TAMBUNAN: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Photo) continues to dismiss Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that he has the numbers to be the new prime minister.
Saying that he was not overly concerned that he had not yet heard the news from the King, Muhyiddin promised to continue to assume his responsibilities as Prime Minister.
“So far, I have not been summoned, so I do not need to react hastily to such things,” he told a ceramah here yesterday, a day before the state elections.
But even if it did come to that, Muhyiddin said he could resign or, with the King’s consent, dissolve Parliament and call elections.
Muhyiddin stressed that he remained constitutionally the Prime Minister and acted in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Constitution.
He said he had also raised the matter with Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun, who confirmed that he was still prime minister.
Muhyiddin said that he was not crazy about power and that he would accept the end of his term as God’s plan for him.
“If it is God’s will that I finish my term, so be it.
“As a Muslim I believe that we can only plan and God will decide and all religions also have the same belief.
“In the meantime, I want to continue to shoulder my responsibilities as prime minister until I can no longer,” he said, adding that he had done a lot in his seven months as prime minister.
He pointed out that, according to the federal Constitution, if Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had received strong evidence that the current prime minister did not have the support of the majority of members of parliament, it would be quoted and told him.
On Wednesday, the PKR president claimed that he had obtained a strong majority to form a new government, but did not reveal the exact number or names of the MPs supporting him pending an audience with the King.
Sultan Abdullah is in treatment at the National Heart Institute after complaining of discomfort on Tuesday.
