Selangor residents lined up to fetch water last month. More outages are expected starting today in four districts.

PETALING JAYA: More than 300,000 consumers in Selangor will run out of water for the second time in a month, after another river pollution incident caused unscheduled water outages today.

In a statement today, Air Selangor said that the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants had to completely halt their operations following contamination detected at Sungai Semenyih, the raw water source for these plants.

“The cessation of operations of these plants will affect 273 areas, where 309,605 consumers will experience unscheduled interruptions of the water supply in four districts, which are Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang.

“Air Selangor has reported this incident to the Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) and steps are being taken to identify the source of water contamination in and around Sungai Semenyih,” it said.

Air Selangor said it could not provide an expected time frame for when the water supply would resume normally.

Almost 1.2 million consumer accounts in the Klang Valley were affected by unscheduled water outages in early September after four treatment plants were shut down due to contamination from a factory.

A total of 1,292 areas in the Klang Valley, Petaling, Klang / Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat were affected.
