KUALA LUMPUR: Wearing face masks is only mandatory in crowded public places, said Chief Minister (Security Group) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pix).
Admitting that there was still confusion about the use of face masks as part of the Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP), he said it was not necessary if one was alone and practiced physical distancing.
“There are many public places, including parks, but if you are alone you do not need to wear a mask because it is only mandatory in crowded public places. In crowded markets, buses and LRT, it is mandatory to wear masks.
“But if you are alone or there is a physical distance between those present, for example in restaurants, it is not necessary to wear masks. You can’t eat with your mask on, ”he said today at a press conference on the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).
Ismail Sabri made this clarification after a viral report on social media of an individual who was cited for not wearing a face mask even though he was alone in a public area.
As of August 1, the wearing of face masks became mandatory in crowded public places, and violators are subject to a fine of RM 1,000 under Law 342 (Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Act 1988).
Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri urged the local authorities to be firm in withdrawing the licenses of the owners of entertainment establishments who still refused to comply with the SOP.
He said that entertainment center-related arrests had occurred almost daily, although many reminders and notices had been issued.
“The government order is clear, that is, nightclubs and entertainment centers cannot resume operations yet and are still on the banned list,” he added.
He also said that the National Security Council had agreed in principle to a suggestion from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture about the reopening of tourist activities, especially outdoors, such as Zoo Negara and Legoland.
Regarding the application of SOPs, he said that the police arrested 201 people for various violations, including not wearing face masks and not practicing physical distancing, and all had been imposed compound fines.
He said that 14 illegal immigrants were also arrested yesterday in the framework of Op Benteng at the national level. – Called
