PETALING JAYA: US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has directed personnel at all US ports of entry to begin seizing disposable gloves manufactured by Top Glove Corporation Bhd.

The CBP action follows an earlier statement that it has found “sufficient information” to believe that the glove manufacturer uses forced labor in the production of disposable gloves in Malaysia.

“Today’s forced labor finding is the result of a months-long CBP investigation aimed at preventing goods made by modern slavery from entering American commerce,” said Troy Miller, senior official serving as the commissioner. of the CBP.

“CBP will not tolerate the exploitation of vulnerable workers by foreign companies to sell cheap and unethically manufactured products to American consumers.”

Meanwhile, CBP said the recent findings expanded into a withholding release order (WRO) that CBP issued in July 2020.

The WRO issued several months ago was based on “reasonable but inconclusive information” that multiple indicators of forced labor existed in Top Glove’s production process.

This included debt bondage, excessive overtime, abusive living and working conditions, and withholding of identity documents.

Top Glove has 60 companies within its group and exports to more than 195 countries.

He previously said he was working with CBP to remove the arrest warrant at its subsidiaries, Top Glove Sdn Bhd and TG Medical Sdn Bhd, following the forced labor allegations.

Earlier today, he said his American attorneys are reaching out to CBP representatives to learn more about the alleged use of convicted, forced or contract labor.
