The state of emergency will not be a burden on people, says the deputy from Saratok

KUCHING: The state of emergency that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is supposedly seeking will not be a burden on the people, but will only imply the suspension of Parliament, says Saratok MP Ali Biju.

“Only Parliament would be suspended and political activities would be limited,” he said.

The Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources said that he was made to understand that the alleged Emergency Order would not imply a military government or curfews or any restriction on economic activities.

“In other words, the rakyat is not going to suffer any burden and traders, tugboats and captains of industries will follow the same things as before. Taxi drivers can still drive,” he said in response to former attorney general Tommy. Thomas’s opinion against declaring an emergency.

Ali said in a statement on Sunday (October 25) that those who disagreed with having an emergency meant that they preferred to have elections during a “raging pandemic.”

He called for “less politicking” and for people to work together to stabilize the government, fight Covid-19 and restore the economy.

“I think we can all agree that what Malaysia needs now is a solid plan to keep everyone safe and healthy, and an economy-driven strategy to keep our local industries and businesses running smoothly.

“The last thing we need is to scare our foreign investors with political uncertainties.

“And for the government to continue pushing the fight against this pandemic and for the economic recovery to continue uninterrupted, we need a stable political landscape,” he said.

In Thomas’ view that it was unconstitutional to declare an emergency in the current situation, Ali said that Emergency Orders were provided for in the Constitution.

“I’m almost sure that your arguments have merits that delve into the subtleties of the law and the complexities of interpreting the Constitution, but legal jargon is not what is going to cure Covid-19, cure the economy, lower the political temperature or stabilize the nation, “he said.
