KOTA KINABALU: Domestic tourism, sports and recreational activities, as well as professional service sectors, are among the last sectors to be opened in the fifth phase of Sabah’s movement control order (MCO).

Sabah’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said that these sectors can operate from May 10 (Sunday).

The parts of domestic tourism that can operate include accommodation, adventure and recreation, food and beverages, ticketing services, etc.

Hotels can also operate, but facilities and services such as surau, gym, spa, sauna, lounge, pool, meeting rooms, seminar rooms, and buffet will remain closed.

Shafie said arts and cultural activities that do not involve a crowd of more than 10 people are permitted, adding that environmental, wildlife and park activities can also be conducted for recreational, surveillance or investigative purposes.

“All of these must strictly comply with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) mentioned before this,” it said in a statement on Sunday (May 10).

Permitted sports include golf, tennis, shooting, weightlifting, cycling, sailing, bocce, squash, ping pong, karate, wushu, and taekwondo (kata), while group recreational and sports activities cannot involve more than 10 people at a time.

Professional services of engineers, lawyers, architects, accountants, financial consultants, surveyors, pharmacists, consultants, veterinarians and others are also allowed.

“We are asking airlines that serve domestic routes to also increase their flight frequencies,” Shafie said.

Stores that sell motor vehicles, heavy machinery, and bicycles may also operate.

Those who need to travel between districts must comply with the SOPs that have been established.

“Continue with security measures such as social distancing, putting on masks, hand sanitizers when you are in public, and maintaining high hygiene standards at all times,” Shafie added.
