The PS5’s fan is one of the main reasons the console is so huge. And Sony Interactive Entertainment even went so far as to explain why it decided to make the fan so big. And now, it looks like the company will also improve fan performance over time. This will be done through firmware updates.

In an interview with 4Gamer.net, PS5 Thermal and Mechanical Design Team Leader Yasuhiro Ootori explains that data from the console’s accelerated processing unit (APU) will be collected over time for each game. Specifically the heat data based on the temperature sensor inside the APU itself and three others around the main board.
And based on the data obtained there, Sony Interactive Entertainment will optimize fan performance for each game. As mentioned above, this is done through online updates. In a sense, it’s done similarly to Nvidia’s DLSS, but for temperature rather than graphics.
This means that the cooling on the PS5 will improve over time, the more games are played. And being a gradual process, it is likely not something most people notice every time it happens. But maybe it’s something to think about whenever you see a firmware update available.
