Liverpool look ready to sing Ozan Kabak from German club Schalke on the day of the deadline, after agreeing to a deal for Ben Davies of Preston North End.
Two centers, then, after a month of reports that they would refuse to sign one of them. What changed? Certainly the sense of panic intensified after Joel Matip’s last injury against Tottenham.
On our call Monday, Dan Morgan was joined as usual by David Lynch, and the pair discussed how Liverpool’s frantic search for a defender led them to the Turkish international and what convinced the club to go ahead with business.
“Liverpool tried to downplay the importance of [Ozan] Link Kabak in the summer, “Lynch said.
“But Schalke are in dire financial straits, and the player would seize the opportunity.
“Mustafi seems to be the option for Schalke [if it happens], and that would make sense to everyone. ”
Lynch continued: “It’s not a good position for Liverpool as they want to be the ones with the cards.”
However, it is interesting that all of these players Liverpool are linked to are from clubs that are in financial trouble and need money. So there is also a sense of despair on his side. “
As the afternoon continues to offer twists and turns, it now seems more and more likely that Davies and Kabak are the revenue that many have longed for.
The structure of that Kabak deal will tell many what the longer-term intentions are, as ongoing speculation about an option and a purchase obligation applies to the narrative around the 20-year-old.
What is clear is that Liverpool are now fully committed to solving the central crisis in the remaining hours of the January window. What has changed in Boston since FSG will remain to be seen.
However, all of this now depends on what Liverpool do for the rest of the season in terms of success. The risk now certainly applies financially, as does the risk to Michael Edwards’ reputation as a shrewd and methodical transfer trader who does not act out of desperation.
Whether or not all of this is worth it remains to be seen.
