KUALA LUMPUR: The government of Perikatan Nasional will follow the decision of the previous government of Pakatan Harapan not to ratify the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Parliament heard.

Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar (Photo) He said it was the Pakatan government’s decision to withdraw from the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“If the previous government, which believed it had the mandate of the rakyat, withdraws, then of course the current government will ensure that our next course of action will surely be based on, among others, what the majority of the people I really wanted to, “he said in response to a follow-up question from Maria Chin Abdullah (PH-Petaling Jaya) during Question Time.

Maria had asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to explain what actions were taken to raise awareness about the Rome Statute and what other international channels are available for Malaysia to use to combat crime against humanity and do justice for causes such as the Palestinian and Rohingya issues.

The Rome Statute is the treaty that establishes the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Kamarudin said Wisma Putra and other relevant agencies will continue to be active on the international platform to raise all relevant issues, including the plight of the Palestinians and Rohingya.

To the initial question, Kamarudin said that the Pakatan government decided to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on April 5, 2019.

Following the decision, Wisma Putra had issued a withdrawal notice to the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), as depositary of the treaty on April 29, 2019.

“On May 15, 2019, the UN confirmed Malaysia’s withdrawal from the Rome Statute, which is enforced on April 29, 2019, which is the same date as Malaysia’s withdrawal from the Rome Statute, and officially removed from the list of signatories, “he explained. .
