PETALING JAYA: Children around the world and in Malaysia have been negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the government has been urged to make their access to education, health care and safety a priority.

Suhakam Children’s Commissioner Datuk Noor Aziah Mohd Awal said the pandemic has had adverse effects on many, including children around the world.

“In Malaysia, children face many challenges due to the pandemic.

“They also face emotional stress and the risks of being victims of physical violence,” he said in a statement on Friday (November 20), welcoming World Children’s Day this year.

Noor Aziah said that children from poor families face financial instability and cannot join school online without the necessary technological facilities.

He added that from January to November 14 this year, Talian Kasih had received a total of 1,847 calls related to children.

“Children in conflict with the law also experience multiple health risks due to poor and unsafe conditions in detention centers.

“I believe that, as adults, we have an important role to play in ensuring a better world for our children to live,” he emphasized.

The Commissioner for Children urged the government to ensure that all children have access to education without discrimination, including bridging the digital divide to allow all children the opportunity to reach their full potential.

“Financial assistance during Covid-19 must be extended after the pandemic to ensure that all children can live with adequate means.

“All children must have access to primary health care and immunizations must be available to all children,” he said.

In light of the increased number of cases of mental health and violence against children during Covid-19, Noor Aziah said it is vital that the government introduce new initiatives to address these problems.

“I would like to emphasize that children have the right to be heard, respected and treated with love and affection.

“Let’s work together to create a better world for all children,” he said.

This year’s World Children’s Day is celebrated with the theme “A day to reinvent a better future for all children”.
