JOHOR BAHRU: Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Rosol Wahid, said his ministry will collaborate with the Department of Chemistry and the Ministry of Health (MOH) to identify the best mechanism to check whether substandard face masks are sold in the market.

He said that there were too many masks on the market and that some were even sold at very low prices, but the effectiveness of which could not be determined.

As such, the ministry aims to raise awareness among the public about the importance of choosing appropriate and quality face masks.

“The 3-layer face mask should have the function of stopping the spread of the Covid-19 virus, but when we checked in the laboratory, we found that some masks do not fulfill that function.

“This is what worries us, and more so when we hear complaints that masks are sold at very cheap prices, even the 3-layer ones. But we fear that these substandard face masks cannot stop the spread of the virus, ”he told reporters after visiting mask distributor Durio PPE Sdn Bhd here today.

Also present was the chairman of the state Committee on Unity, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Dr. Chong Fat Full.

Rosol said this when asked by journalists how to detect substandard face masks and whether the ministry had certain standards for identifying such masks.

According to him, it is understood that there was only one face mask manufacturer in Johor and only the Ministry of Health had the face mask filtration efficiency test equipment.

From January 29 to yesterday, a total of 3,712 controls were carried out in the places of sale and supply of masks, while in the state 174 complaints related to masks were received.Named
