KUALA LUMPUR: Up to 77,988 Malaysians from various occupations were laid off from March to October 16 this year, according to data from the Employment Insurance System (EIS), says the Human Resources Ministry.
According to the Ministry, the DIA records showed that the figure consisted of 11,584 in the managerial category, 22,647 in the professional category, as well as 17,019 in the technical and professional category.
The remainder consisted of 7,786 in the clerical and support staff category, while 10,423 were down in the sales and services category.
The figures were given by the Ministry in a written parliamentary response, in response to Datuk Mohd Fasiah Mohd Fakeh (Bersatu – Sabak Bernam), who asked for the numbers of those laid off from March to October this year.
Fasiah also asked the ministry to declare the effectiveness of the Hiring Incentive Program (HIP) and the measures taken by the government to help workers who received leave without pay.
The Human Resources Ministry said the government had introduced the Employment Retention Program (ERP) to encourage employers to retain their workers, particularly those who were asked to take leave without pay.
The Ministry also said that under the Salary Subsidy Program, until October 16 of this year until October 16 of this year up to 331,950 employers involving 2.7 million workers had received payments totaling RM11.9bil.
