KUALA LUMPUR: Family and friends of a Nigerian man, who allegedly threw his grandson out of a window after not raping his stepson, told police that he suffers from mental health problems.
Urine test results showed he was taking medication, police said.
“It is also understood that he has some mental health problems.
“There is no record of treatment (for mental illness), but his friends and family said so,” Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Comm Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin told a news conference yesterday.
On Sunday morning, the Nigerian was said to have had a fit of rage after his family prevented him from raping his stepson at his apartment in Danau Kota, Setapak, here.
The man then beat his family members before throwing his four-year-old grandson from the third floor of the apartment.
The child died at the scene.
Shortly after, he jumped out the same window but survived the fall.
Comm Saiful said the suspect’s wife, the stepson he attempted to rape and their eight-year-old biological son are still in the hospital.
“All continue to receive treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital for their injuries and trauma,” he said.
The cause of the grandson’s death has yet to be determined, he added.
The suspect was found naked at the time of the incident, and not the other family members as speculated on social media, he said.
Asked if the man was involved in deviant teachings, he said: “We are looking into it.”
The suspect has been in pretrial detention for seven days.
