The late Palace flurry ends in disaster as Newcastle stuns with two late goals

Newcastle responded to a late flurry from Crystal Palace by snatching the win at Selhurst Park with two late goals, Callum Wilson and Joelinton combined to deadly effect.

After a boring soccer game with few clear chances, Palace turned up the heat with five minutes to go.

But the move turned into a disaster when the Newcastle forwards scored a fantastic victory to the death for Steve Bruce’s team.

The magpies dominated a first half in which, from the beginning, the hosts let their visitors take all the ball. That tactic showed immediate signs of failing, but Joelinton’s long shot after eight minutes sailed high and wide.

BruceThe team continued to be the most productive throughout the semester. In fact, it took Roy Hodgson’s Palace 25 minutes to register a shot on goal.

Eberechi Eze, who has shown good form of late, fired from a start and Newcastle’s stopper Karl Darlow stopped the effort.

That shot seemed to give impetus to PalaceRanks as, five minutes later, they had their best chance of the half. Darlow produced another save, this time from Jeffrey Schlupp, before Eze’s knitting run produced a solid effort.

Schlupp’s header was the only other noteworthy effort in what was generally a shy first 45 minutes.

In the first forays of the second half, both sides tried unsuccessfully to break the deadlock. Eze and Jonjo Shelvey failed to create anything special with their set pieces.

But then another great opportunity came Newcastle – and the style of Callum Wilson. The Englishman, who had previously offered nothing, clung to Manquillo’s cross before passing the far corner.

Then the game got even wider, with more opportunities. Newcastle midfielder Matt Ritchie towards Joelinton was delicious, but the forward could only look and spin the ball.

Directly at the other end, Palace substitute forward Christian Benteke dragged a deflected shot.

And even though Palace launched an all-out attack in the final five minutes with more efforts from Cheikhou Kouyate and Patrick van Aanholt, it was Newcastle who took the win with less time on the clock.

Wilson, with only his second notable contribution of the night, surpassed Vicente Guaita after Joelinton’s assist.

Then it got even better for Newcastle when Wilson became supplier to Joelinton, who, after his teammate’s pass, ran into space and beat Guaita with a deflected shot from Gary Cahill.
