KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of the Interior has held talks with related agencies and bodies on the amendment of the Immigration Law of 1959/63 to establish a more severe punishment against illegal immigrants.
Deputy Minister of the Interior Datuk Seri Dr. Ismail Mohamed Said (pix) said the discussion, which took place Sept. 24-26, specifically focused on the legal strategies and enforcement policies outlined in the Holistic Enforcement Plan Against Illegal Immigrants.
“The result of the discussion will be studied for the formulation of a regulation and a law that strengthens and hardens the existing punishment for illegal immigrants and the employers involved,” he said during the question and answer session at Dewan Rakyat, today.
He responded to a question from Che Alias Hamid (PAS-Kemaman), who wanted to know the main aspects that will be addressed in the formulation of legal strategies and policies by the Ministry of the Interior in the Comprehensive Plan for the Control against illegality. Immigrants.
Ismail said that the legal and political strategies are among the plan’s five strategies to be implemented over a five-year period.
The other four are in security control at the border and exit to the country, management of foreign workers, compliance operation, as well as media and advertising.
He said the goal of the plan is to create an uncomfortable ecosystem for illegal immigrants to carry on with their daily lives by empowering existing regulatory and enforcement agencies, including growing strategic cooperation and awareness among the local community.
As such, the Ministry of the Interior, through the Department of Immigration and in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, especially the police and MMEA (Malaysian Maritime Control Agency) will continue to carry out enforcement operations in locations identified as hotspots for foreigners, he added.
