PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department expects between 200,000 and 250,000 illegal immigrants to participate in the labor recalibration and repatriation plans, the latest government initiative to reduce the number of undocumented foreigners in the country.
Its CEO, Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud (Photo) said that since the program launched on Nov. 16, the department had received applications from 478 employers to hire about 2,000 illegal immigrants.
“We expect more applications to come in within six months that these plans are available,” he told a news conference on Friday (December 3).
He said employers must submit their applications via the Internet and that they can choose to legalize their workers who are currently employed without a valid permit, or they can search for workers among those detained in immigration warehouses.
Application submission can be done through www.imi.gov.my with a deposit payment of RM 500 per worker.
Khairul said that at the same time, employers must apply to the Peninsular Malaysia Labor Department for approval of the number of foreign workers they can hire and the department will reverse its decision to immigration authorities.
Successful applications will be issued with a voucher to allow prospective workers to be given a medical checkup, and once they are given the clean health certificate, employers can apply for work permits and make any necessary payments.
Employers must pay the one-time recalibration fee of RM1,500 per worker, RM1,850 levi for construction and manufacturing or RM640 for agriculture and plantation, RM60 per pass, RM125 as processing fee and visa of between RM5 and RM20 depending on nationality. .
“If the investigation process is unsuccessful or if the worker does not pass their medical exam, then they will be deported,” he said.
Illegal immigrants who can be employed under the recalibration plan are those whose work permits or social visit passes have expired, those who work in a sector other than the one indicated on their permit, they were not reported to have fled their employer and not blacklisted.
For illegal immigrants who wish to return to their home country under the recalibration plan, they must have a valid passport or temporary travel document, return ticket and pay the compound of 500 RM and go to an immigration office to process their application .
“We had a discussion with representatives from 15 embassies and missions that embraced this initiative and agreed to help their citizens to get an appointment through our system,” Khairul said.
On November 12, the government announced the implementation of the two plans, where under the labor recalibration plan, employers in the construction, manufacturing, plantation and agriculture sectors will be able to hire legally undocumented foreign workers.
The plans will run for six months from November 16 to June 30, 2021.
