In terms of foldable phones, we’ve seen Samsung launch a couple of options over the past year, while companies like Motorola have also jumped into the discussion. Meanwhile, Huawei has also released two folding phones of its own: the Mate X and the similar Mate X. Now, the Chinese company is ready to launch a new foldable smartphone: the Huawei Mate X2.
As first reported Letsgodigital, a new design patent apparently confirms that Huawei plans to replace the outward-facing display design with something that remarkably resembles the recently released Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. The patent is not exactly new as it was first registered with the CNIPA in China in August 2019, although the details have just been published.
As you can see, the images suggest that Huawei’s next folding phone will have two displays: a smaller cover screen and the main folding screen. This could be some kind of admission that the outward-folding display of the company’s two folding phones might not be the most practical option. Instead, the new design should offer significantly more protection to the folding screen, which is probably the most fragile component of a folding phone.
Also, we might see a periscope lens for zooming as well as two selfie cameras on the deck display. In fact, the rear camera model looks a lot like that of the Huawei P40 Pro +. This suggests a penta camera setup, although we have no other confirmed specs for now.
As for the rest of the design, the Mate X2 appears to have a slanted design on the back of the phone, with a thinner bottom half. This could be an attempt to balance the camera bump, which is a problem on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in certain display modes.
In addition, the main screen is free of notches or perforation cutouts, and Huawei keeps all the cameras of the Mate X2 on the outside or on the back of the smartphone.
