KUALA LUMPUR: The government today withdrew Poisons (Amendment) Bill 2019 from the Order Document, making it the third time it has been withdrawn from the Dewan Rakyat.

The presentation of the bill was postponed in August and December last year under the administration of Pakatan Harapan.

Vice Minister of Health Dr. Noor Azmi Ghazali asked for a motion to withdraw the bill, but no reason was given.

The bill seeks amendments to protect the rights of patients by giving them the option to decide where to buy their prescriptions.

It also seeks to require registered doctors to write prescriptions at the request of their patients, and a possible jail sentence for doctors who do not.

However, the bill was challenged by medical groups and parliamentarians, prompting the Health Ministry to hold talks with interested parties.
