KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya will present the fourth industrial revolution (IR4.0) and the digital roadmap in mid-September, Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said today.

He said this would outline phase two of the National Digital Network (Jendela) action plan and prepare the nation for 5G technology.

Over the weekend, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that Jendela, under the 12th Malaysia Plan, aimed to pave the way for more comprehensive and high-quality broad-based service coverage across the country.

Saifuddin said the roadmap would seek to introduce 5G broadband coverage in an efficient and effective way over the next two to three years.

He said this will benefit consumers without a significant increase in service costs and will also allow industries to implement their respective solutions using 5G, among others.

“While we are focused on optimizing our 4G access, there is a need to prepare for 5G. The government is serious about 5G and the nation’s digital trajectory, ”he said in his keynote address at Invest Malaysia 2020 – Virtual Series 3 here.

To date, 71 5G case demonstrations totaling RM131 million of industrial investment have been carried out in Kedah, Pahang, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Terengganu and the Federal Territories.

Saifuddin said they sought to integrate 5G into agriculture, digital health, education, entertainment, manufacturing and processing, oil and gas, smart cities, smart transportation, and tourism.

He said the demonstrations will continue through December 31 and urged relevant innovators, service providers and stakeholders to participate.

“These projects focus on facilitating and cultivating the development of a holistic and inclusive 5G ecosystem.

“As various industries adopt 5G, it could positively influence the rate of contribution of other industries to GDP (gross domestic product), effectively enabling the country to produce and manufacture more high-quality goods and services, and benefit the rakyat with better income and affordability, “he said.
