TANGKAK: The government has plans to increase its purchase of the Covid-19 vaccine to meet the immunization needs of around 60% -70% of Malaysians compared to 30% today, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The prime minister said this was because some nations had already purchased doses of the vaccine that were higher than their population.

“As for Malaysia, we already have 30%. I have instructed Health Minister Datuk Seri, Dr Adham Baba, and Khairy Jamaluddin (Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation) to negotiate and increase it from 30% to 60% or 70%.

“Until now, this has been the advice of the Ministry of Health … if it can be increased to that number, then more people will be protected from the coronavirus,” he said in his speech at the Gambir state electoral district celebrations, Deepavali 2020. here. Sunday (December 13).

Muhyiddin, who is also a Gambir assemblyman, said providers have also been asked to expedite delivery of the vaccine, which is scheduled to arrive in March.

In late November, Muhyiddin said that the government had begun implementing an RM3bil plan to obtain enough Covid-19 vaccines to immunize 6.4 million people in Malaysia as soon as the vaccine has been shown to be safe enough to be used. .

The first batch of vaccines is expected to be available early next year.

Meanwhile, he also ordered all temporary hospitals for Covid-19 to reopen due to continued spikes in cases in various states such as Selangor, the Federal Territories, Negri Sembilan and Johor.

Muhyiddin said that although the government’s steps were effective compared to other countries, Malaysia has yet to overcome the pandemic.

“As long as people are being threatened by Covid-19, I will not rest and work to manage the pandemic and the country’s economy,” he added.

Muhyiddin also said that the government would be conducting a study to find out how many of the people here have fallen below the poverty line due to Covid-19.

He added that now, the poverty line has risen to RM2,208 per capita, resulting in many entering the B40 group, which are the poor and the poorest.
