KUALA LUMPUR: The government is introducing a specific Wage Subsidy Program to help employers and employees in certain sectors that are still economically affected by Covid-19, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
To be open for applications from October 1 to December 31 this year, the program was expected to benefit 1.3 million workers and is estimated to involve RM2.4 billion, it said when announcing the PRIHATIN Complementary Initiative Package. (Kita Prihatin) today.
This initiative follows the Salary Subsidy Program previously launched under the Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus Package, which will end on September 30.
For the Targeted Wage Subsidy Program, wage subsidies will be awarded to employers that are still affected, that is, companies that from the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) still face lower incomes of at least 30 percent. percent compared to last year.
The salary subsidy will be awarded for up to three months at a rate of RM600 per month for each employee, with a maximum of 200 employees per company.
Muhyiddin said that based on the comments he received about the Wage Subsidy Program, there were those who were not eligible to receive it because they did not meet the eligibility requirements to be registered with the Social Security Organization (SOCSO) before April 1, 2020 .
“To ensure that this group is not left behind, the Directed Salary Subsidy Program will be open to companies registered with SOCSO before September 1, 2020.
“For new applicants who have not received the salary subsidy before this, they will now be eligible to receive the salary subsidy for up to six months,” Muhyiddin said.
The prime minister said that the Wage Subsidy Program introduced during the Movement Control Order period had provided assistance to employers without requiring small businesses to show loss of income to be eligible.
