PERMAISURI: Perikatan Nasional (PN) has not fallen as it still has the majority in Dewan Rakyat despite Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakob withdrawing his support, says de facto right minister Takiyuddin Hassan.
The minister of the Prime Minister’s Department (for Parliament and the law) said the government is not affected by his move.
“I found out yesterday through the media. I do not know his objective or his intention. In any case, the existing government is still legitimate and has enough deputies.
“The important thing is that the government has worked well since it took office in March. People can see that too. So we will continue to serve through its organizational structure at all levels, ”he said.
Takiyuddin, who is also the secretary general of the PAS, said this when he met with reporters during his visit to the Setiu sessions and magistrates’ courts here today.
With Jazlan nowhere to be found, the ruling coalition now has 111 seats compared to 108 for the opposition.
The 222-seat Dewan Rakyat currently has 220 MPs following the deaths of Hasbullah Osman (BN-Gerik) and Liew Vui Keong (Warisan-Batu Sapi). The by-elections for the two seats have been canceled until further notice due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Jazlan, who is also chairman of Kelantan Umno, announced yesterday his withdrawal from support for the PN government at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Kota Bharu.
Last Monday, Jazlan had announced his resignation as chairman of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board effective January 6, expressing his dissatisfaction with the PN government.
On January 6, the Supreme Council of Umno accepted a motion to separate from Muhyiddin Yassin’s PPBM in the 15 general elections, but said that it will only make a final decision at the party’s general assembly on January 31.
