The government considers the next step after the increase in Covid-19 cases

PUTRAJAYA: The government will closely observe the rapid increase in the Covid-19 situation in the country before deciding whether to close companies and social sectors.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said striking the right balance between health and the economy was important in making decisions related to the pandemic.

“We are under the control order of the recovery movement, which means that we allow the economic, sports, social and educational sectors to operate.

“Currently, things are under control and we have not made any decisions to change this.

“We are closely monitoring the situation. If cases spread faster, we may need to see what our next actions are.

“But it’s important to find the right balance between health and finances,” said Dr. Noor Hisham.

Dr. Noor Hisham, however, expressed confidence that the country could overcome the current wave of Covid-19, which was seeing a sharp increase in cases.

“Can we contain this? For the moment we can. We need to do what we did in March and April when we flattened the curve with public health intervention and each individual followed the ministry’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“We cannot let our guard down, even if we are fatigued, as there is no fatigue from the virus,” said Dr. Noor Hisham.

“This upward trend is what worries the Ministry of Health and the reason we remind everyone of it on a daily basis, as it is definitely in line with the increase in Covid-19 cases and deaths globally.

“To date 34.2 million cases have been registered globally and the number of daily registered cases shows an increase of around 309,000 cases compared to 302,000 previous cases,” he said.

Dr. Noor Hisham said that the Ministry has always worked with other agencies to carry out this responsibility, but that they cannot do it alone.
