The Google Messages app has just passed a billion downloads on the Play Store. It is not uncommon for an application made by Google to reach this total, but for Google Messages it is significant. Let’s talk about why.

As seen by Android PoliceGoogle Messages, at some point in the past few days, surpassed a billion downloads on the Play Store. Technically speaking, it’s an impressive feat for any app, even if it’s pre-installed, like Google Maps, but the messages aren’t.

Unless you buy a Pixel or Android One device (or a handful of other devices from different original equipment manufacturers), Google Messages is not installed on your device by default. In contrast, your OEM, be it Samsung, LG, OnePlus, or others, has its own text messaging app that is installed on the device to handle SMS messages.

We all know there is are not 1 billion pixels, so Messages has clearly become a popular alternative messaging app for the broader Android user base. Why? Messages has long offered a clean and easy user interface that doesn’t skimp on features, for example. The app is regularly updated with options like dark mode, an image marking tool, and even a handy web interface. The biggest reason, perhaps, could be that Messages supports RCS in multiple operator independent regions. That’s a great SMS update that users definitely want.
