Manchester United have been backed to cut ties with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the conclusion of the Premier League campaign, claiming the Norwegian will pay the price for the club’s poor signing in the summer. Ed Woodward and the United board failed to hand Solskjaer over his main targets, including Jadon Sancho, despite making five major signings.

United signed Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles, Edinson Cavani, Facundo Pellistri and Amad Traore this summer, but did not bring in any of Sancho, Jack Grealish, Dayot Upamecano or Nathan Ake, who have been claimed to be priority targets. by Solskjaer.

And having suffered two defeats in the first three Premier League games of the new season, external pressure is already mounting on Solskjaer.

The 47-year-old team was beaten 6-1 at Old Trafford by José Mourinho’s Tottenham before the international break.

And they look to bounce back against Newcastle today, but Danny Murphy doesn’t expect Solskjaer to last much longer in the Old Trafford hot seat.

But the former Liverpool midfielder believes it is the failures of Woodward and Solskjaer’s superiors that will ultimately lead him to ruin.

Player-turned-expert Murphy told the Football Index podcast: “Manchester United have had a very rocky start to the season and I don’t see them qualifying for the Champions League this season.

“I don’t expect Solskjaer to survive the season as Manchester United manager. I like Solskjaer, but the signing has disappointed him and I hope he will pay the price.”

“I think the team’s balance is not right defensively and it’s too easy to face them. Their captain Harry Maguire has been well below his best and obviously has distractions off the field.

“Even [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka looks like a shadow of the player we saw tackling for the club last season. [Paul] Pogba and [brunp] Fernandes are exciting creative talents, but with both of them in midfield I think leaving too much responsibility on others to cover them.

“They just won’t be competitive as long as they concede goals like they do.

“Manchester United had an incredible second half of the season last year and did very well to secure third place with a place in the Champions League. I wonder if some of the players started to believe in their own expectations and that. it has led them to underperform this season.

“I think they need to get back to playing hard yards and show the desire to get past their opponents again.”

Murphy believes United wasted the summer window, though he insists he did not understand the “obsession” with Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho.

The 20-year-old was Solskjaer’s number one target, but United could not come to terms with Dortmund, who wanted £ 108m for the England international.

“The summer transfer window was a huge missed opportunity for Manchester United and you feel like they have lost the momentum they worked so hard to build at the end of last season,” continued Murphy.

“You compare Manchester United’s poor recruiting to Liverpool’s and they couldn’t be more different in the way they can identify players and strike quality deals.”

“I did not understand the obsession with signing Jadon Sancho. He is a wonderful player, but it seems that the deal is never going to happen.

“They should have moved on to other targets. [Donny] Van de Beek is an interesting signing and he is a good midfielder from area to area, but again I don’t think he will solve any of the club’s problems.

“I also find the situation of the forward very strange. If this was an area that Manchester United wanted to strengthen, why had they not identified a list of players to go after?

“And if it was Cavani they wanted, why not sign him weeks earlier so he could have a preseason and be ready to start the new season?

“I like Cavani and I feel like he could work well, but he was clearly a panic signing.”
