Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp’s fears have subsided after the German federation made a decision on Joachim Low’s future as Germany coach.
Klopp has long been seen as the ideal successor to Low, whose reign came under increased pressure following Germany’s 6-0 beating of Spain on Tuesday.
Low led Die Mannschaft to World Cup glory in 2014, but failed to pull his team out of the group stage four years later in Russia.
Results have slipped in recent months, putting pressure on the Germany manager, and Lothar Matthaus said before Tuesday’s game that Klopp is the “only person” who can replace Low.
However, the head coach is expected to remain in charge of the national team at least until after next summer’s Euro 2020 final after receiving a vote of confidence from the president of the German FA, Fritz Keller.
Keller insisted that Germany will bounce back stronger from the humiliation at the hands of Spain, and his comments came after national team manager Oliver Bierhoff said Low retains “total confidence” in the FA.
The German Soccer Federation issued a statement from Keller on Wednesday that did not mention Low by name, but delivered a challenging message about the team’s prospects for recovery.
He said: “Yesterday we had a black night in Seville that hurt. The spectators at home, me, the coach, the players.
“I was in the locker room after the final whistle and I felt everyone’s extreme disappointment, but also the will to correct this situation.
“Our young team can cope with this setback if this game, in which not only heart and passion was lacking, is carefully analyzed and the necessary conclusions drawn. It has potential.”
Keller said some problems were expected with the national team that made the decision to bleed the young players ahead of Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
“We made a conscious decision to make the switch with a lot of new and young players with perspective,” he said Wednesday.
“This road, as you saw yesterday, can be rocky and also lead to painful defeats.
“Even if everyone had wished for a different way out of this difficult but until then year of successful international matches, our challenge remains to build a strong team for the next three big tournaments: the European Championship next year, the World Cup 2022 and the European Championship in our own country in 2024 “.
Klopp previously admitted that he would consider taking office in Germany as the right time.
When asked last year if he could replace Low, the Liverpool manager said: “I couldn’t say one hundred percent if he was the right one. If the question ever came up, I would think about it, but not now.”
