KUALA LUMPUR: The five victims of the collapsed bridge on the SUKE highway have been successfully removed from the crushed van.

A spokesman for the City’s Fire and Rescue department confirmed it.

The last victim was successfully extracted around 9.29pm on Wednesday (March 3).

Previously, the van and the people in it were trapped after a bridge under construction collapsed on top of it.

The city’s Fire and Rescue Department in a statement said they received a distress call about the incident around 5:58 p.m. Wednesday.

It added that 23 firefighters, three fire trucks and two emergency rescue service vehicles from the Jalan Hang Tuah, Tun Razak and Cheras fire stations were dispatched to the scene along the MRR2 in the direction of Ampang.

“Initial investigations revealed that a part of a bridge under construction collapsed into a factory van. Information has been received that at least five people are trapped in the vehicle,” the statement added.

Work is underway to rescue the victims.

Meanwhile, the head of the City’s Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, Asst Comm Zulkefly Yahya, said a trailer carrying heavy machinery is believed to have struck a portion of the SUKE highway bridge currently under construction.
