Jurgen Klopp has said that finishing in the top four is Liverpool’s “main objective” this season after they suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Alisson made two massive mistakes as Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes took a severe blow as he sat 10 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side after playing one more match.

Liverpool remain in fourth place but are just one point ahead of West Ham United and three points ahead of Everton, who are two games behind.

When asked if Liverpool faced a tough battle to stay in the top four, Klopp told Sky Sports: “That is our main objective, that is clear.

“We will try everything, there are enough games to ensure that, but we have to win.”

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson ruled out the reigning champions from the title race after their 1-0 loss at home to Brighton on Wednesday.

Klopp also defended Alisson after his crucial mistakes against City, which saw Liverpool lose three straight games at Anfield for the first time since 1963.

“It is true that we did not give him many options, especially the first one,” he added.

“Second, yes, he was wrong, maybe he had cold feet, it sounds funny but I don’t know the situation. He has saved our lives many times, there is no doubt about that, tonight he made mistakes.”
